September 3, 2011 at 2:22 pm in reply to: 3rd week of Allopurinol side effects? Or Coincidence? Help!? #11901drknowParticipant
The sores have faded and I did not stop the Allopurinol.? I think the canker sores were a result of a sinus infection and dry mouth from snoring.? Seeing as I have not felt any other symptoms, I am going to keep an eye on the throat and mouth and take it day by day.? But right now I am confident the sores were not related.? Not positive but pretty certain.? I will keep updating on my journey.? It was a scary and awful coincidence but I think it was just that.? If I get another outbreak soon, then I will consider dropping Allopurinol.? Thanks to all for the responses.
August 31, 2011 at 7:05 pm in reply to: 3rd week of Allopurinol side effects? Or Coincidence? Help!? #11897drknowParticipantI was off on Holiday for a bit and my throat is still raw and awful from ulcers / canker sores.? I have never had an outbreak like this but have had canker sores off and on over the years.? I have decided to stay on the Allopurinol for now, if the throat does not clear up within another 2 days I wil see a Dr.? Since I still don't have a fever and no other symptoms and was at the end of my 3rd week of Alloprurinol, I am thinking just a coincidence.? Wouldn't an alergic reaction come on sooner??? Has anyone else here ever had canker sores in throat and mouth form Allopurinaol??? One thing after another!!? Ughh!!
drknowParticipantSounds great Keith!!? I took my first 200MG dose today and next week will go up to 300MG for two months and then get tested.? So far no further attacks though my main sore spot is still sore in some positions and I'm rather afraid to wear shoes still!? I did notice an ache in my other foots heel.? Can't say if it's the ol' Gout for sure, if it is, it's not near the pain as previous attacks.? I have been taking a colchicine here and there when I feel a few pings of pain.? Keeping my fingers crossed for no serious attacks in these first few months of Allopurinol…!?
?
I have been drinking a few glasses of red wine here and there but still have not had beer in months.? That may change tonight.? I'll just keep it to only a few and load up on extra water…
?
So far no side effects that I can pin on the Allopurinol as being “bad”.?

Gout is painful and can cause us distress, it is true. However, if it gives you a wake up call and allows us to change our lifestyles without needing a spell in A & E (or ER, depending where you're from) it could also, in some weird way, save our lives.
?
I think this may be very true and should be noted!
drknowParticipantThank you so much for posting that link about the side effects, it has really relaxed my mind after I read that.? I think I have been worrying too much and that certainly stress has probably played a role in some of my more minor flare ups.?
?
I told a friend about having the gout and he laughed about it!? He seemed to think I had it coming and when I look back, I realize in many ways I begged for it but uric acid issues are in my family and genetics played a role.?
?
In a way I have to be thankful as this exprience has made me re think a lot of things and ways I have been living my life.? I had awful eating habits.? I drank quite a bit of beer, and would more or less ignore water in my lifestyle.? Maybe a glass a day… Eating garbage food before bed… not eating brekfast or lunch and then having a large dinner… not doing much physical activity… You get the picture.? So, yeah, maybe I had it coming but I can't beat myself up about it, mother nature and my body has done that already! 😉
?
It does seem that some people seem to think I brought this upon myself or all that all gout sufferers do.? Considering how I was living, It's kinda hard to argue against that but I have to believe genetics are a big part of this that many people don't understand.? When I read posts from the people who are physically active, weigh proper, and eat good and still get it, it is a reminder it's not totally my fault, though I do accept the majority of the blame.
?
I only hope I can stay on this path and lose even more weight and continue relearning how to eat right in order to feel right.? Such simple things like fruit and water!!? Why would I turn my back on them??? It's shocking to think that the vast majority of the food options that are thrown in our face are more or less GARBAGE and almost dare I say poison.? It almost seems that healthy food campaigns are made by the big food corporations to be non effective… why have a banana when you can have Doritos?? Or a Snickers Bar! But after all I am an adult, I chose to eat Burger King and Fries etc… I had a choice all along and chose poorly.
?
I don't expect that I am going to go vegan or full on veggie or quit all alcohol forever or anything like that, I'm gonna eat pizza, just not everyday.? It's sad to think that big business has brain washed nations into awful eating habits.? No wonder Diabetes is going haywire.? I think that's were I was headed.? fast food so cheap, quick and easy but hardly even “real” food.?
?
I'm rambling.?
I hope the allopurinol will help me out and I hope to share my experience here on this informative site so others might learn from me.? Without this site I fear I may have gone on for years trying to avoid allopurinol and other drugs.? Who wants to rely on drugs???? But after reading these pages and forums, I realize now that without knowing and LOWERING your UAL you will never dissolve these crystals and they will lead to more and more bad news.?
?
Thank you KEITH for this incredible site and taking the time to respond to mine and other peoples posts.? I realize, I am a total newbie at this but I feel as though I have been treated with respect but at the same time responded to firmly and realistically.? This is a priceless gift to me and all of us.? Thank again, Really, Thank you Gout-Pal.
drknowParticipantI took my first dose of 100 mg Allopurinol today.? I did not have any allergic reactions so far.? For a spell I felt kinda hot and sorta had the sweats but it passed rather quickly.? I wonder how long it takes to know if one is allergic to this medication???
?
For fellow USA gouties, if you live close to Canada, it is much cheaper to fill your script for Colchicine, especially if you have no health insurance.? You will have to go to a clinic and pay a DR. around $30-40 to have them sign your script but you will save a lot money provided you don't have to drive too far.?
?
I am mentally preparing myself for oncoming attacks.?
?
Am I guaranteed serious attacks or is it possible that they could be minor or not at all?? I have only had two attacks in the last 8 months and my Uric Acid Level was 7.1 These were also my first attacks ever.
?
I also notice that my gouty joint is visibly more pronounced compared to my non gout toe joint even though there is no pain unless I were to hit the sore spot.? Will my foot ever go back to normal and how long would it take?? I do not think my shoes would fit right now!? Good thing it's summer.? My whole toe isn't swollen, just where the main pain was/is.
drknowParticipantI'm ready to take it but sadly my foot is slowly blowing up and burning right now pretty bad.? I drank a large bottle of black cherry juice and I dare say it feels worse right now, not that I blame the Cherry Juice.? On a side note I went to try and fill my scripts for Colchicine and Indomethacin here in the USA and the price was around $320 to fill them!!? I don't have health insurance and if I could afford that kinda money on pills, I'd have healtrh insurance wouldn't I?? Right across the border from me in Canada I could get the same script for $60 as long as I could get a Canadian Dr. to sign my script.? Go Canada!?
?
The pain is pretty rough right now and I give up trying to figure out what I ate to cause this current flare up.? I did have two glasses of red wine last night but also drank copius amounts of water.? I don't care anymore.? Let's hope the Ibuprofen can calm the swelling and throbbing down a little.?
?
Out of curiousity, have any of you ever taken Allopurinol during a bad flare up?? Did you end up in the ER?? I'm tempted to start it up right now…?
?
thanks for the feedback rdavisiii & zip2play. ?
drknowParticipantWell, I finally saw a Dr. was prescribed Allopurinol which I will start taking any day when I fill the script.? I really tried to do it naturally and to no avail.? The blood results may be a while but either way, I can't see getting out of taking the Allopurinol.? Hope I don't have any bad side effects.? The pain is too great and letting it continue with no treatment is heading for disaster.?
?
On the plus side I had lost 22 pounds over the last few months and am feeling great minus the gout!? My blood pressure was also great.? Hoping my tests come back ok in all other areas and look forward to being able to walk and hike again.? Thank god for my Bike though.? I could not have lost the weight without it!? I will post more of my experince as time goes on, it is quite a scary thing to suffer from and sooooo many websites offer contrary advice on eating etc…!? This is the best site I have found and people have been Blunt and to the point.? The bottom line is knowing your real SUA!? Tested!?
?
Know my only fear is slipping back into my bad habits!!? I need to stay strong as I'd like to lose another 20-40 pounds over time.? In an odd way, Gout may have been the best thing that ever happened to me as far as lifestyle and eating habits are concerned.? Mother natures's warning shot, and it was a DIRECT HIT!
?
Tonight it's feeling very good thanks to Ibuprofen.? Of all the natural remedies and things I tried, I'm not sure why I didn't ay more attention to something as simple as Ibuprofen!!? It REALY helped.? If you are going through a bad flare up, consider taking a dose of 300-400 Milligrams twice a day during the flare up, maybe more if its really bad.? It can help!
?
On a side note, drinking so much water may have helped with my weight loss and seems to be helping with other issues I had, especially sinus issues.? I have suffered from chronic sinus problems, really bad, and was prone to throat infections etc and coughing mucus etc… since I have been on a steady water intake, I haven't had any infections and my mucus comes up easy and way less often.? I have also managed to almost completely stop taking nasal sprays for clogged sinus.? Every once in a while I'll need it to sleep but before I was rather addicted.
?
Sounds crazy but I have to thank Gout for my lifestyle changes, I just hope I can maintain them.? I have to say wearing t shirts I bought 20 years ago and having them fit again is kinda… Cool.
?
Thaks for this site and I look forward to sharing my experience with others and reading others experiences as well.
?
drknowParticipantThings were looking up yesterday, very little pain.? Enjoyed a concert, ate no meat, really felt great all day.? Walked a few miles even.? Today, I can feel an attack coming on, I can't stand on the foot and can tell the pain is on the way…? Broke down and made an appointment with a dr. tomorrow.? I hope they can give me some results asap as I'm still unsure whats hapening to me and why.? I have made great strides in diet and cut out beer totally and alcohol has been reduced to a pitiful and small level and yet the pain lingers on… I am very curious to know my SUA once and for all.? I really wanted to do this naturally but can't take the pain and the not knowing.
drknowParticipantIn other words no matter how much water I drink or cherries I eat those crystals are gonna or could hang around and perhaps get worse until I get the proper meds.? I have to suck it up and visit a dr. and get it tested.?
I was under the impression that what I was feeling were the leftover crystals from the initial attack and that unless I was feeling an actual attack any pain was associated with my toe was striclty from left over uric acid crystals and new ones were not present because I was not under an attack. ?
I have done all I can on my own and will need medical attention.? I can't take it anymore.
?
On the positive side I actually feel really good and have lost noticeable weight.? Thanks for the input.
