The Doctor Visit for Allopurinol
So, I got the prescription for 300mg allopurinol.
I will start taking when the juice fast ends,
which is in 8 days.About the bursitis, the doctor said those things
are very gradual to dissipate and I should give
it another 6 weeks (it has been 3 weeks since it began).
The specialists usually do not like to drain them unless they are red and
painful, which mine is not. Also recommended
daily icing for 10 minutes. So, hopefully it
should be getting smaller in 6 weeks. -

That sounds good, Johnson.
There’s a couple of other things that might help:
1) Follow the ice treatment with a warm (not hot) “dressing”. By which I mean a warm towel, or the type of bean/rice bag that you microwave for a few seconds to generate. Or, you could go “old school” like a friend of mine. He loves his traditional rubber hot water bottle on his swollen knee, as he watches TV.
2) Keep the arm raised above your heart when relaxing.I had a couple of episodes of this elbow bursitis. Before allopurinol, I tried to keep my elbows (and all other joints) away from prolonged cold.
I hope it gets better soon.

yeah..kinda bummed out that 30 days of juice fasting didnt seem to fix the problems but hopefully the medication will help.
On the positive side of that, I’m sure my entire body is functioning better and is more healthy. I’ve lost 22 pounds in the process.

Week 1 of Allopurinol
Well, this past week I’ve had the flu…so its very hard to tell the effect of the allo in terms of how I feel or side effects. Possibly it has a slightly draining effect but I’m not sure. I need to make sure I’m getting plenty of water regardless.
The blood test result was interesting. 3.7… but the strip area didnt get 100% covered. Still, I think i’ve put even less blood on it before and got a 4.4 or something, so it seems its going down. I’m content to wait for further weeks’ data to see the real effect.
No difference in tophi and I have to remind myself those things don’t correct overnight.

I’ve also had the flu. So, you have my sympathies. Thankfully getting better now.
It’s very wise to keep hydrated. Allopurinol can cause problems if you have insufficient urine to clear it’s by-products. Problems are rare, but it’s good to be aware of them.
Tophi shrinking is definitely a long term outcome. But, you’re going in the right direction ๐

First Gout Attack on Allopurinol
entire right foot swollen up, attack started about 10 days ago…measured UA. 4.4, so that is low, must be dissolving ua back into bloodstream?
-
April 6, 2017 at 7:50 am #2993Keith TaylorParticipant
It could be, Johnson. But it just doesn’t sound like gout to me. If it’s still swollen, I’d get it checked. Because gout attacks should resolve themselves in a week. Also, attacks caused by partially dissolved crystals usually affect more than one area (but not always).
